What is Enhanced Category 5?
Enhanced Category 5 is a Specification designed for data networks to support very high-speed data transmission, like Gigabit Ethernet, at a bandwidth of 100 MHz.
Why use Enhanced Category 5 instead of Standard Category 5 Products?
The current Category 5/Class D Specifications guarantee data networks to perform at 100 MHz and is suitable for 10Mbps and 100Mbps data transmissions. The demand however to increase the amount of data transferred has become significant. Enhanced Category 5 provides Power Sum Characteristics that enable these increased data rates.
What is Power Sum?
Traditionally Crosstalk has only been measured between any combination of two pairs within the cabling. Power Sum is a way of calculating the Crosstalk on an individual pair caused by the three other pairs in the cabling. This is of crucial importance for Gigabit Ethernet, where all four pairs are used simultaneously.
How has the product actually improved?
Standard Category 5 supports data rates up to 100 Mbps across cabling infrastructures at a bandwidth of up to 100 MHz. Only a limited number of characteristics have been specified and need to be exceeded. Enhanced Category 5 supports increased data rates (presently up to 1000 Mbps) across a cabling infrastructure offering the same 100 MHz bandwidth. To achieve this, many more characteristics have been specified to provide a much more tightly controlled cabling infrastructure. The circuitry of the Net 5 Enhanced Modules and Patch Panels has been improved using innovative on-board compensation techniques to provide performance in excess of the Cat 5E Specification.

What is the difference between Category 5 Enhanced and Class E?
Category 5 Enhanced components and systems are specified up to 100 MHz. They can support very high-speed protocols like Gigabit Ethernet using complex encoding and de-coding techniques. Class E is the proposed Category 6 standard for systems performing up to 200 MHz.
